How can we be authentic in this terribly artificial and unsafe environment?
The same way we are authentic everywhere: by remaining connected to ourselves and the environment and seeing what happens.
Maybe I'd even coach basketball or mentor teenage musicians.
I entered UCLA's master's in education program and student-taught in Compton.
Since then, I've worked at charter and public high schools in both Los Angeles and the Bay Area, teaching ninth, 10th, and 12th grade English, as well as journalism and, for one year, something heinous called "Grammar Lab." I have primarily worked with low-income students, although recently my classroom has diversified to include more affluent kids as well.
As a teacher, I've learned a lot about education, but it's also been a lens through which I've learned about everything else. Every year, I face 150 individuals with unique talents and backgrounds. At home, some contend with abuse, addiction, gangs, and fractured families.
So at least one budding entrepreneur recognized the problem existed and saw a potentially lucrative gap in the dating site market.
I'll confess I wasn't really sold on the idea but it would certainly make a refreshing change from browsing through the gazillions of Thai dating sites with pages of grainy photographs of overpowdered gold-diggers all describing their English as 'minimal' and looking for a foreign man with a good heart between the age of twenty and ninety.
I would like to meet other single foreign men (teachers would be great! I did live in Bangkok for 2 years (2002-2004) but during that time I was in a relationship so I did not experience the single life.I want them to leave my classroom smarter, kinder, and more self-possessed. Many years I teach the same books, but my approach depends on what's happening outside the classroom.
